VISCII FONTS

Brief Summary
  • Developed by the Viet-Std Group (Vietnamese Standardization Working Group) in 1992, VISCII (pronounced as viskey) stands for Vietnamese Standard Code for Information Interchange. TriChlor organization is one of many non-profit organizations provides VISCII fonts for free.
  • This 8-bit code standard is promised to standardize the way Vietnamese characters are being interchanged across the Internet, including documents and email messages. However, its standard status is still under reviewed by the W3C, an International organization for the Internet standards.
  • It has been implemented on many computing platforms, including Windows, DOS, Unix, X-Windows, Mac. In addition, many Vietnamese Web sites support it as their Vietnamese coding standards.

NOTES:

1. Downloading these fonts will allow you to view Vietnamese Web pages that support VISCII fonts.

2. However, if you want to type, edit, and print Vietnamese documents in any Windows 3.1 or Windows 95/98 applications, such as Microsoft Word, you have to do two basic things:

  • Download VISCII fonts.
  • Download WinVNkey, a keyboard driver for Vietnamese characters. For instruction on how to download and install it on your computer, click here.

3. Because VISCII fonts are saved as ZIP files, you will need an unzip program, such as WinZip or Pkunzip, to unzip it after downloading. For detailed instruction on how to download and install these Zip/Unzip utilities, check our Software Download  Web page.
