ABOUT VISCII AND VIQR

What is VISCII

VISCII stands for Vietnamese Standard Code for Information Interchange. It is proposed by the Viet-Std Group (Vietnamese Standardization Working Group) in 1992 to promote the standard coding for Vietnamese characters across the Internet and the World Wide Web. Many Web sites have adopted it as characters coding standard for Vietnamese on Net. Originally, it was developed by the fact that there is not a standard set for coding Vietnamese on the Internet yet. Thus, many Web surfers are often confused about which fonts they should have on their computers and Web browsers in order to read Vietnamese on Net. However, the Viet-Std Group is still working on legal documents and technical documents before it's finally accepted by the 3WC, an International body of Internet Standardizations, as a coding standard. Meanwhile, the VPS (Vietnamese Professional Society) has developed VPS fonts as another option for Web viewing fonts of choice. VNSoft has done the similar thing. Right now there are at least four sets of Vietnamese fonts that are widely used on most of  Web pages: VISCII fonts, VPS fonts, VNI fonts, and TCVN fonts, developed by the Vietnam Data Communications .

What is VIQR

As we have mentioned above, there is no standard for Vietnamese characters coding yet, at least right now. Thus, many organizations and Net users try to adopt another font convention that could be easy to write and understand by everyone. As a result, VIQR was born as an alternative choice of presenting Vietnamese characters on the Internet and the World Wide Web. Originally, VIQR stands for Vietnamese Quoted Readable, and it is also called as VietNet convention. Basically speaking, VIQR convention is based on the popular ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange), a 7-bit coding standard. For example, the following sentence is written in VIQR convention:

To^i ye^u nu+o+'c to^i tu+` thu+o+? co`n na(`m no^i.

The are another way of writing it, such as:

          To^i ye^u nu*o*'c to^i tu*` thu*o*? co`n na(`m no^i .

The advantage of using VIQR is users can use it without downloading any special fonts in order to write and read it. Yet, it takes time to get used to read and write actually. For more information about this VIQR convention, check the  Viet-Std Group Web site.
